String theory has a rich structure of dualities, which connects different formulations of the theory to each other. These dualities can be used to define string theory on spaces which are ill-defined for theories of point particles, and prominent examples are so-called non-geometric backgrounds. In this talk I will first briefly review some essential features of non-geometric backgrounds in string theory, discuss some simple examples, and illustrate applications to moduli stabilization and model building.
