One-dimensional topological surface terminations

he last decade has given rise to the discovery of unprecedented topological quantum states of matter, but also initiated revolutionary progress in predicting and realising established topological phases at high, preferably room temperature. I will report on recent progress at different frontiers of this development, particularising to material embeddings giving rise to one-dimensional topological surface terminations: one direction is given by step edges on the surface of the topological crystalline insulator (Pb,Sn)Se [Sessi et al., Science 354, 1269], another by bismuthene on a SiC substrate as a room temperature realisation of the quantum spin Hall effect [Reis et al., arXiv:1608.00812].
