Do quantum point contacts magnetize?

Quantum Point Contacts (QPCs) or short quantum wires/constructions are fabricated from the semiconductor  layered materials like AlGaAs/GaAs.The two-dimension electron gas that resides at the flat interface may be  tailored by  lithography and applied voltages into, for example, a wire. The conductance is found to be quantized in steps of 2e**2/h (1998). This is well understood in terms of non-interacting electrons. There is also a related  “anomalous” plateau at 0.7 in the same units. Recorded already 1996 it is still not well understood. There are a  number of propositions but as yet no consensus. This talk presents arguments thatspin-polarization or local magnetization may occur for interacting electrons in the low density limit.
