WP25 Instantons and Black Holes (TD4)

After an introduction of the mathematical concepts (topological charge, solitons), the basic examples of monopoles (Dirac, t'Hooft-Polyakov) and instantons are discussed. In the following, the properties of solitons and instantons in supersymmetric theories (BPS states) and in gravity and string theory (black holes and higher dimensional branes) are presented. This module deals with non-perturbative configurations in particle physics and in gravity. The main goals of this course is familiarity with non-perturbative effects in various field theories and in string teory.
