(12.11.) How tropical are scattering amplitudes?

A wealth of physical information may be inferred from the singularities of scattering amplitudes. Very intriguingly, mathematical objects known as cluster algebras have been shown to encode these singularities for six- and seven-particle amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. At higher multiplicity however, a serious conceptual and practical obstacle is that these cluster algebras become infinite. Focusing on eight- and nine-particle amplitudes, in this talk I will discuss how the remarkable connection between cluster algebras and tropical geometry provides a 'selection rule' for taming this infinity, thus enabling predictions for their analytic structure.
