Mathematical Physics and String Theory

ERC (European Research Council) Advanced Grants allow established researchers to pursue ground-breaking, high-risk projects that open new directions in their respective fields of research. With his proposal “Fundamental Aspects of Strings and Gravity”, Prof. Dieter Lüst as PI convinced in exactly these points. Being awarded this grant, over 5 years Dieter Lüst worked-out new connections between strings as mathematically consistent theories of quantum interactions and gravity. In the period of 16.-18.10.2013 a kickoff meeting took place at the LMU in Munich, jointly organized with the ERC grant holders I. Antoniadis and S. Ferrara. Additional meetings within the ERC project have been held in the periods 22.-24.10.2014, 20.-25.11.2016 and 22.-27.07.2018. more

The Munich string group is split between the Arnold Sommerfeld Center for Theoretical Physics (ASC) at the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität and the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics located in the north of Munich. There is however a close interaction with common seminars and joint collaborations. more

The Munich String Theory group works on several problems in String Theory and its relation to the Standard Model of Particle Physics, to (Topological) Quantum Field Theories, to gauge theories, to gravity and to cosmology. more
