Methods for Identifying Calabi-Yau Threefolds with Large Volume Minima (15.05.)

Large-scale surveys of string phenomenology are reliant on large datasets of
explicit Calabi-Yau threefolds on which to compactify the superstring. The
largest such set is only extant implicitly, in the form of the Kreuzer-Skarke
database of reflexive polytopes. Actually constructing Calabi-Yau threefolds,
while conceptually well understood, has (until recently) been plagued by
ineffectual software and insufficient computational resources. In this talk, I will
describe recent progress on this front, and the ongoing efforts to build
databases of actual Calabi-Yau threefolds for phenomenological study. As an
application, I will discuss the search for so-called "Swiss Cheese" manifolds
which exhibit a large volume minimum for the Kahler moduli.
