Back to the roots of string theory (08.05.)

What is string theory? Even after over 40 years of research only partial
answers to this question exist. In this talk I'd like to present a possible new
approach to answering this question. This approach goes back all the way to
the roots of string theory in the analytic S-matrix program. This program aims
to construct scattering amplitudes from symmetry and consistency alone. This
approach has been very fruitfull in field theory in recent years. Based on this
philosophy I'll show how one can define tree level string theory in a flat
background without reference to a worldsheet. This talk is based on joint work
with Tobias Hansen.
