Short Biography
Alexander Vilenkin (Institute of Cosmology at Tufts University, USA) is a leading cosmologist. His work was groundbreaking for our present picture of the early universe. He made important contributions to the description of boundary conditions in the early universe, inventing the concept of eternal inflation and suggesting a quantum origin from nothing. Equally influential was his work on cosmic strings. He is also the author of the popular book ``Many Worlds in One: The Search for Other Universes´´.
Vilenkin received his undergraduate degree in physics in 1971 at Kharkov University (Ukraine). He later moved to the United States, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1977 at the State University of New York in Buffalo. Since 1978 he is at Tufts University where he became a professor in 1987 and where he is now the director of the Institute of Cosmology and holder of the L. and J. Bernstein chair. He was Presidential young investigator of the National Science Foundation and is Fellow of the American Physical Society.
