Abstract:
The black hole/string transition is the conjecture that black hole microstates are continuously connected to highly excited string states. A canonical version of the transition is the statement that the Euclidean Schwarzschild solution continuously goes over to a gas of strings, via a condensate of string winding modes. This condensate is known as the string star, or Horowitz-Polchinski solution. In this talk, we first review the existing literature and then discuss the black-hole/string transition for rotating black holes, including the rotating version of the Horowitz-Polchinski solution.
