(20.05.) Covariance of physical laws in Quantum Reference Frames and the extension of the Equivalence Principle

In physics, every observation is made with respect to a frame of reference. Although reference frames are usually not considered as degrees of freedom, in all practical situations it is a physical system which constitutes a reference frame. Can a quantum system be considered as a reference frame and, if so, which description would it give of the world? In this talk, I will introduce a method to associate a “quantum reference frame” to a quantum systems and a transformation to change to a different quantum reference frame. I will then show that entanglement and superposition are quantum reference frames dependent features even in Galilean quantum theory, and that the quantum reference frame transformation leads to a generalisation of the notion of covariance of dynamical physical laws. Finally, I will show that the notion of quantum reference frames can help us formulate an extension of the weak equivalence principle and the Einstein equivalence principle.
