(05.11.) Seeing Islands with Eyes Wide Shut

Andreas Karch (UT Austin)

Hawking’s argument for information loss and the usual argument for the Page curve share a crucial assumption: that the black hole interior and exterior can be treated as independent quantum subsystems. I will review why this assumption fails in gravity, emphasizing the split property, gravitational Gauss laws, and the completeness of the algebra of asymptotic observables. I will then discuss how Page curves and islands arise when access to observables is restricted and what these calculations tell us about the localization and transfer of information.
