WP23 String Theory I (TD1)
This module gives an introduction into the theory of closed strings (Nambu-Goto action, Polyakov action) in terms of a two-dimensional conformal field theory. It describes the various approaches to quantization and introduces compactifications on tori. Later, the discussion is extended to open strings and the relation between string theory and its low energy description in terms of an effective field theory is developed. The main goals of this module are an understanding of the fundamental aspects of perturbative bosonic strings in the framework of a two-dimensional conformal world-sheet theory and its relation to quantum field theories.
