Electron Transport through Atoms, Molecules and Nanowires: Advances in Experiment and Theory

The ongoing trend of miniaturizing electronic components and magnetic storage devices naturally leads to exploring the mechanisms of charge, spin and heat transport in conductors at the nanometre scale. Owing to the latest experimental and theoretical advances investigations into the aformentioned transport properties can be performed for two-dimensional electron gases, quantum dots, nanowires as well as for single molecules and atoms. The seminar will cover topics such as transport channels in single-atom and single-molecule contacts, magnetoresistance at the atomic scale, charge and spin transport in quantum Hall systems and topological insulators, spin caloritronics as well as mechanics at the ultimate size limit.
