Momentum-space anisotropy and pseudogaps in cuprate superconductors: What do we learn from cluster dynamical mean-field theory?

The selective destruction of coherent quasiparticle excitations in the "antinodal" region of momentum-space is a striking property of the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors and a key challenge for theory.  In this talk, I will review recent attempts to understand this phenomenon from extensions of the dynamical mean-field theory.  I will show that electronic correlations act differently in different regions of the Brillouin zone and that the destruction of quasiparticles at the antinodes, the opening of a pseudogap, and the formation of Fermi arcs, can be viewed as an orbital-selective Mott transition in momentum-space. Comparisons to tunneling, angular-resolved photoemission and optical conductivity experimental data will be discussed.
