Symmetry protected topological phases in PSU(N) spin chains

Thomas Quella (University of Cologne)

One-dimensional spin chains with PSU(N) symmetry are shown to possess N different topological phases. The topological order is reflected in a specific entanglement pattern resulting from the Matrix Product State representation of the ground state wave function. It may be detected using a non-local string order parameter which characterizes each of these N phases unambiguously. Indeed, analytical and numerical results confirm that our order parameter may be used to extract a quantized topological invariant.

Remark: During the talk we will illuminate the differences between Lie group and Lie algebra representation theory. No prior knowledge is required beyond the simplest case of SU(2).
